Subject: Concern Regarding Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's Visit to the Élysée Palace
Your Excellency President Macron,
I write to you with profound respect and appreciation for your continued commitment to the values of liberty, human dignity, and peace—both in France and around the world. I am especially grateful for the support the French government has extended to the Ethiopian people during times of hardship, including your investments in development and diplomacy, which have brought hope to countless lives.
However, it is with a heavy heart and deep concern that I note your visit to Ethiopia on December 21, 2024, and your reception of Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed at the Élysée Palace on May 22, 2025. While I fully acknowledge the importance of diplomatic engagement, I feel compelled to respectfully express my objection to this reception in light of the grave humanitarian crisis unfolding in Ethiopia—particularly in the Amhara region.
Despite growing international awareness, drone strikes and military operations against civilians in Amhara have continued unabated. These attacks have resulted in significant civilian casualties, displacement, and suffering. It is deeply disheartening that, as a global advocate for human rights, your administration has not taken a public stance or used its moral and diplomatic influence to call for an end to these atrocities.
Furthermore, by extending support and legitimacy to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s administration without publicly addressing its increasingly authoritarian tendencies, there is a risk of sending the wrong message—that silence and engagement may be interpreted as approval. The democratic space in Ethiopia has drastically diminished; war crimes are escalating, press freedoms are curtailed, opposition figures are imprisoned, and the genocide against the Amhara people continues.
Your Excellency, history will remember the leaders who stood firm in defense of justice, as well as those who chose engagement without accountability. I urge you to use your esteemed position to stand with the Amhara people and all Ethiopians who yearn for peace, democracy, and justice. France’s voice—guided by its republican values and moral leadership—can play a pivotal role in encouraging dialogue, transparency, and a peaceful resolution to Ethiopia’s crisis.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. I hope that France will reaffirm its commitment to human rights and stand on the side of the oppressed.
With the highest respect,
